Chungdahm Learning to Attend EDIX 2015

Chungdahm Learning will be participating in the 6th Education IT Solutions Expo (EDIX) held from May 20-22 in Tokyo, Japan.

Started in 2010, EDIX is Japan’s largest industry trade show, gathering top IT service providers, electronics manufacturers, content and hardware providers, and more, looking to expand their business in the Japanese education field. EDIX is expected to have around 600 exhibitors this year, including Chungdahm Learning.

Chungdahm Learning Partners with LG Electronics to Expand “Smart Learning”

Late last month, Chungdahm Learning signed an MOU for a joint business partnership with LG Electronics regarding Global Smart Learning. Chungdahm Learning has also signed a supply agreement with LG Electronics, to provide the Loudclass Smart Learning Solution. This Billion KRW scale project currently offers its tablet-based learning solution to over 30,000 students and teachers.

LG Electronics is currently providing TVs and 70 tablets for Smart Classrooms to Sejong City schools. This year, they plan on expanding with Chungdahm Learning’s Loudclass Smart Learning Solution. Chungdahm Learning will be responsible for solution installation and maintenance, server management and administration, hands-on teacher training, end-user management, and general services.

Chungdahm Learning’s Smart Classroom Solution is not simply a tablet with Internet access and messaging capabilities. Chungdahm Learning’s Smart Classroom Platform allows tablet teaching with a built-in digital textbook.

In fact, Chungdahm Learning’s Loudclass Smart Learning Solution allows teachers to control students’ tablets, as well as facilitate teacher-to-student and student-to-student interaction. Chungdahm Learning Signs MOU to Enter Thai Smart Learning Market

On October 3rd, Chungdahm Learning signed an MOU & NDA to enter the Thai Smart Learning market.

The signing ceremony, held in Bangkok, signals the intent for Chungdahm and the Thai government to sign a contract and found a learning center within 6 months. The subjects will cover not only English but also Mathematics and Science.

Earlier this year, Thai officials visited Chungdahm Learning to see its cutting edge tablet-based smart learning content, solution, and platform first hand.

According to Thai officials, the government is pushing a “Smart Classroom” policy to increase education levels by offering high quality services and equipment for digital generation,and has distributed a considerable number of tablets to schools. In particular, they need not only devices and content but solutions optimized for the Smart Classroom.

Thus, the Thai government has been assessing Korean companies, believing that their sophisticated content and solutions could be a strong asset. It chose Chungdahm Learning for the project, whose solution is the first in the world to have 20,000 individually paying student users.

The MOU also agrees to launch a pilot Smart Class in November in schools affiliated with the IPST (The Institute for the Promotion of teaching Science and Technology). Chungdahm Learning will continue spreading its smart class solution not only through the Thai public sector but the entire education system.

By an invitation from Chungdahm learning, I spent the better part of last week exploring digital classrooms and the future of interactive textbooks in Seoul.Founded as an ESL after-school academy in 1998, Chungdahm has grown into a multilingual textbook publisher with thirty thousand students aged 10-15 across South Korea.

Korea’s global ascent brought their economy into all levels of technology, owning swathes of the global smartphone, semiconductor, television and automobile industry.

Korean companies have a finger in every tech-flavored pie: from Samsung manufacturing the iPhone’s A7 processor to LG building the Google-branded Nexus devices. Korea has the kind of clout in the global technological supply chain that startup-centric growth markets rarely notice.

Encumbered with teaching critical thinking and language skills to one of most wired generations on earth, Chungdahm recently invested in putting textbook content and exercises on tablets. Their implementation is distinctly work in progress, but they clearly have a foot in the door where other international schools and publishers are only just getting started.

Seeing how technologically adept these students are, my in-class experience should not have been a startling surprise. Then I spent an hour with a dozen students who grew up on broadband. Kids who seamlessly switch attention between screen and teacher. Kids managing multi-modal interfaces. The profound implication of how much smarter every generation becomes is staggering.

My mental model of a classroom (imagine Swedish public school in the eighties) should have faded, yet all I could see was flashes from Ender’s Game. Kids brought up playing competitive video games online. Kids asking Google for help with their math. Kids whose thoughts bleed out on the web.

These are fascinating times. Technology is multiplying before our very eyes. New conceptual infrastructure is being laid by unlikely global players. The competitive edge of schmoozing Apple or hacking Android is rapidly decreasing, levelling the field for smart, forward-looking solutions.

Any self-aware technology provider is quick in acknowledging that their solution is still far from perfect. Chungdahm’s approach intrigues me because their starting point is far removed from most Valley-entrenched companies.

They are onto something interesting, and I’m staying involved to see where they end up.

CHUNGDAHM Partners with SK Telecom to Setup Smart Classes in Indonesian Public Schools

CHUNGDAHM Learning Inc. has been participating in the development of smart classes for Indonesian public schools, in conjunction with SK Telecom.

The opening ceremony held on February 4th, 2014 commemorated the launch of smart classes in two public high schools located in Jakarta. Many related parties, including the Assistant Deputy Minister of the Indonesian Education Department, attended the ceremony.

The smart class solution, provided by SK Telecom, utilizes smart boards and tablet PCs to teach digital English and Mathematics curriculum.

The core software driving the smart class solution, called SK Smart Class (SKSC), is based on the technology of CHUNGDAHM’s own unique smart learning solution, called CREO Interactive. CHUNGDAHM also participated in digitalizing local English paper textbook curriculum to be facilitated by local teachers using the smart classroom system.

CHUNGDAHM is also in the process of developing digital textbooks under contractual agreement with Samsung Brazil Research Institute (SIDIA), with the goal of establishing smart classes in the Brazilian public school sector by the first half of this year. CHUNGDAHM’s partnership with SK Telecom brings them one step closer to achieving their goal of replacing traditional blackboards and paper textbooks with smart boards and tablet PCs.

With this project as a stepping stone, SK Telecom’s plan is to expand the establishment of smart classes in Indonesian public schools in conjunction with existing global welfare services organizations, such as the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) that support IT education for youth in underdeveloped regions. They plan for this cooperation with global welfare service organizations to extend globally in conjunction with their B2G business efforts in secondary education curriculum.

Ian Chang, VP of Strategy Division at CHUNGDAHM said, “Following the project in Brazil, this recent project in Indonesia is the company’s latest effort to advance CHUNGDAHM’s outstanding smart class solution globally, together with global corporations like SK Telecom.” He continued, “We expect CHUNGDAHM’s role in future global B2G and B2B businesses to increase in importance as CHUNGDAHM’s learning technologies are utilized in more smart learning environments around the world.”

CHUNGDAHM Learning, SIDIA (Samsung Electronics’ R&D Institute in Brazil) Sign Contract to Develop Digital Textbooks

Education company CHUNGDAHM Learning, Inc. (CEO Young Hwa Kim) signed a contract with SIDIA (Samsung Instituto de Desenvolvimento para a Informática da Amazônia) to design and develop digital education textbooks. CDL is leading the smart learning market by introducing smart classrooms to offline institutes for the first time in Korea. The contract with SIDIA demonstrates CDL’s growing competitiveness in the global market. Under the contract, CDL is developing 16 digital textbooks in Portuguese, Math and English subjects for Brazilian Elementary schools, and among them, the English subject textbook will use CDL content. Development and delivery will be completed by the first half of next year. More specifically, a minimum of 3 books will be developed in CSLP (Chungdahm Smart Learning Platform) format. Samsung Electronics will actively enter the Brazilian education market with its tablet PCs, which will include digital textbooks developed by CDL. The project is part of Samsung Electronics’ ongoing smart learning business efforts, while CDL is expected to be more aggressive in penetrating the global smart learning market with its proven content and curriculum design capability. CDL began attracting attention in the global smart learning market after its participation in the 2013 ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) Conference with Samsung Electronics in the first half of this year. Vice President Ian Chang, Head of CDL’s Strategy Division commented that, “The Brazilian Ministry of Education is planning to introduce tablet PCs in the public education sector. As the global trend of smart classrooms becomes more realized, this project is the first major step not just for CDL, but for any Korean education company to enter the global smart learning market.” CDL recently introduced its own smart classroom program, ‘Chungdahm 3.0’, which enables interactive lessons using learning tabs.
